Chelsea have confirmed that Callum Hudson-Odoi has suffered a season-ending injury during the Premier League clash against Burnley. The England international sustained an Achilles rupture without any contact from the opposition player in the first half and it has now been confirmed that he will undergo an operation to rectify the concern.

“Callum is seeing a specialist this afternoon and is expected to undergo surgery on his ruptured Achilles tendon this evening. The 18-year-old winger limped off during the first half of last night’s 2-2 draw against Burnley, his 28th Chelsea appearance of the season. He has netted five goals since making his debut for the Blues in the Community Shield against Manchester City at the beginning of the season,” a statement from the club’s official website read.

Hudson-Odoi has been getting regular gametime in the Premier League of late and the setback is sure to prove a potential blow for the Blues ahead of a crunch period where they are competing for the top four and Europa League glory. The experienced duo of Pedro and Willian should feature regularly hereafter in the absence of Hudson-Odoi, but neither have the pace attributes which the latter has brought into the fray.

Chelsea are currently occupying the fourth position on the table after a 2-2 draw against Burnley but they could be leapfrogged by the Gunners on Wednesday, should they overcome Wolverhampton Wanderers on the road. Should that be the case, the Blues face a must-win situation at Manchester United this weekend and the game won’t be straightforward, considering the Red Devils are also desperate to make the Champions League places.

Meanwhile, Hudson-Odoi’s current deal with the Blues expires at the end of next season and there are reports suggesting that the club could push through a contract extension with the attacker in the near future. The attacker has attracted interest from Bayern Munich previously but the Bavarian giants may not approach during the summer after the long-term injury setback.
