Arsenal legend Charlie Nicholas has heaped praise on Tammy Abraham by stating that the Chelsea striker has been the standout performer during the opening stages of the Premier League season. The 22-year-old made a slow beginning to the campaign with three goalless games and he was the subject of criticism from a section of the Blues supporters.
Despite this, he continued to earn the faith of manager Frank Lampard and that has eventually paid dividends with him finding his scoring boots. Abraham has already netted nine goals across all competitions to date and out of those, eight have come in the Premier League for the Blues, who are separated from the top four on only goal difference.
Speaking on Sporting Life, Nicholas said that Abraham has been the player of the Premier League season to date and he is pleased by the fact that the striker has been able to prove himself in the English top-flight, he told: “It has to be Tammy Abraham for me. I did not see his goals coming as regularly as what they are. I see a young Emmanuel Adebayor in him, with his long stretching legs but amazing ability to finish. After a game or two, people said he would never make it at Chelsea. I liked what I saw when he was on loan at Aston Villa, so he is the player that has caught my eye the most.”
Abraham’s sparkling form has meant that Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi have been confined to cameo roles off the bench. Both strikers have expressed their disappointment over the current situation and it won’t be a surprise, if one of them heads through the exit door when the transfer window reopens at the turn of the year. Giroud seems the most likely with interest from Inter Milan, who are managed by former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte.
