Paulo Ferreira started his career in the Portuguese league with Estoril. He played in the lower leagues of club football in Portugal for three years before moving to Vitoria Setubal in 2000. Paulo Ferreira played in the SegundaLiga for one season in the colours of Vitoria Setubal and he played a major role as his team secured promotion to the top flight. He scored twice in 33 league games for Vitoria  in temLigato ensure khat the club secured promotion to the PrimeiraLiga via third place.The retired Portuguese national team player was a right midfielder during his time at Estoril and Vitoria Setubal.

The aforementioned Paulo Ferreira made his debut in the Portuguese top flight at Vitoria Setubal. His first game ended in a 3-1 defeat to hosts Maritimo. Jose Mourinho spotted him in his first season in the PrimeiraLiga and he went on to mastermind his transfer to FC Porto in 2002. Mourinho and Ferreira won several titles together at FC Porto.

Paulo Ferreira was converted from right midfielder to right-back by Mourinho during his time at FC Porto. He missed just two games in the league during histwo-year stint at FC Porto. Ferreira won the league title with Porto in each of those two seasons.

In his first season as an FC Porto player,Paulo Ferreira was named in the starting line-up for the UEFA Cup final clash with Scottish side Celtic in Seville, Spain. Porto defeated Celtic 3-2 in that final to win the UEFA Cup in his debut season. FC Porto won the treble that season by seeing off U.D. Leiriain the Portuguese Cup. Porto beat U. D. Leiria 1-0 to add the Cup to the UEFA Cup and PrimeiraLiga titles.

Paulo Ferreira signed for Chelsea from FC Porto in a €20m deal as he followed Mourinho to the Premier League.
